Gone for a Song: A death in custody. By Jeff Waters

One hot morning in November 2004 on Queensland's Palm Island a young indigenous man made some comments that clearly irritated the police officer in the midst of making an arrest nearby.
 
Less than two hours later, the man died in a lock up, and more than two years after that, the first policeman to be charged over a black death in custody faced court. He was later found not guilty.
 
Gone for a Song explores the issues surrounding the arrest, the sudden death, and the long sequence of botched police investigations and official challenges to an inquest.
 
It also focuses attention on the crucial, secret evidence which to this day remain suppressed by the coroner's court.
