The Stuart Case - By K.S Inglis
*Name in pen on first page*
First published in 1961 and reissued to coincide with the release of a film on the subject, this volume recounts the trial of an Aboriginal man accused of raping a white 9-year-old girl. The conviction, based on a typed statement in English - a language that the accused barely spoke - meant that the accused was sentenced to death. The courtroom drama that ensued provided a media platform that ultimately put police procedures and the prevailing racial attitudes of the time on trial. This edition includes an extended epilogue that reveals new information about the case and its aftermath, including the author's meeting with Stuart in 2002. Includes chronology of events. Author is a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, as well as winner of the 1998 NSW Premier's Prize for Australian History and 'Age' Book of the Year for his book 'Sacred Places'.
